What Mulch Actually Does

Mulch is any material spread over the soil surface to protect and improve it. The benefits are interconnected: mulch holds moisture in the soil (reducing how often you need to water), moderates soil temperature extremes, slows weed germination, and — in the case of organic types — gradually breaks down to enrich the soil below. Straw

Straw (not hay, which carries weed seeds) is lightweight, affordable, and an excellent insulator. It's especially popular in vegetable gardens and around strawberry plants. It breaks down within a single growing season, so plan to top it up annually. It also provides habitat for beneficial ground beetles.

Compost

Inorganic Mulch Types and When to Use Them

Inorganic mulches do not decompose, so they require little replenishment — but they also do not improve soil fertility. They suit specific situations where durability or heat retention is the priority.

Unlike organic mulches, inorganic options like gravel and rubber do not contribute to soil fertility over time. If you use them in planting areas, plan to supplement with compost worked into the soil at planting time, or use a thin compost topdressing around plants each season. Soil health still depends on organic matter input, regardless of what sits on top.

Gravel and Stone

Gravel works well around drought-tolerant and Mediterranean-style plantings, in rock gardens, or as a path surface. It retains and radiates heat, which suits heat-loving plants but can stress plants that prefer cool roots. It does not need annual replacement but can be difficult to remove once established.

Landscape Fabric

Woven or non-woven landscape fabric is placed beneath other mulch to suppress weeds. Quality varies widely. Over time, weeds can root into or through the fabric, and it can impede the beneficial breakdown of organic mulch above it. It works best in pathways or around established shrubs where soil disturbance is minimal — it is generally not recommended for annual vegetable beds.

Rubber Mulch

Made from recycled tires, rubber mulch is very long-lasting and often used in playground areas. Application Depth, Timing, and Common Mistakes

Even the right mulch applied incorrectly can cause problems. Keep these practical guidelines in mind:

  • Depth: Most organic mulches perform best at 2–4 inches. Too thin and weeds push through; too thick and water cannot penetrate easily, and plant roots may be starved of oxygen.
  • Keep it off stems: Mulch piled against stems or tree trunks (sometimes called a "mulch volcano") traps moisture and creates conditions for rot and pest damage. Maintain a gap of at least 2–3 inches around any plant base.
  • Timing: Apply mulch after the soil has warmed in spring — mulching cold, wet soil in early spring can delay warming. In autumn, mulch after the ground begins to cool to insulate roots over winter.
  • Weed first: Remove existing weeds before mulching; mulch suppresses new germination but won't reliably kill established weeds already in the ground.
